Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has criticised remarks made by former senator Shehu Sani concerning the political backing of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
Her response came after Sani, during a podcast appearance, alleged that Obi’s support base is largely driven by ethnic considerations.
The former lawmaker argued that many of Obi’s followers come from the same ethnic background as the ex-governor, adding that his potential presidency would not significantly alter Nigeria’s current situation.
Sani was quoted as saying that the enthusiasm surrounding Obi’s candidacy is rooted in tribal sentiment, insisting that a change in leadership under him would not translate into meaningful national transformation.
Reacting in a post shared on her X account on Monday, Yesufu dismissed the claims, describing them as unfounded and unconvincing.
She maintained that assertions about Obi’s support being limited to a particular ethnic group had already been debunked during the 2023 election cycle.
According to her, Nigerians from different regions had openly demonstrated their support, countering the narrative of tribal alignment.
Yesufu further argued that the persistent criticism directed at Obi by political figures indicates that he remains a strong force within the country’s political space.
