The governorship campaign council of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State has distanced its candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, from the controversial half-salary payment implemented during the administration of former governor Rauf Aregbesola.
In a statement issued on Monday, the campaign council said Oyebamiji was not in office when the policy was introduced, noting that he only assumed duty as Commissioner for Finance in May 2017, two years after the salary arrangement commenced in 2015.
The council added that Oyebamiji also served as finance commissioner under the administration of former governor Gboyega Oyetola, during which the half-salary regime was eventually scrapped.
According to the statement, full salary payments were restored within months of Oyetola’s assumption of office.
The APC campaign noted that the modulated salary structure was introduced in June 2015 under Aregbesola’s government due to prevailing economic challenges at the time.
It, however, assured residents that Oyebamiji would prioritise prudent management of public funds and workers’ welfare if elected.
The council said the candidate plans to reintroduce car loan schemes for civil servants and revive food support initiatives.
It also stated that Oyebamiji would focus on housing development for workers, including the promotion of mortgage schemes to improve access to home ownership across the state.
