A Nigerian marriage counsellor, Pastor Bisi Adewale, has advised women not to spend long periods abroad for Omugwo (post-childbirth support), saying it can harm marriages and leave elderly husbands neglected.
In a video shared on Facebook, he criticised women who travel overseas for years to care for grandchildren while their husbands remain alone in Nigeria. He said he and his wife agreed they would always travel together if going for Omugwo, adding that if accommodation was an issue, he could pay for a hotel nearby.
He also stressed that spouses become more important to each other in old age, saying a wife’s role can shift from companion to caregiver as couples age.
