The Senate on Wednesday ordered a full investigation into renewed attacks in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, while directing urgent humanitarian support for communities displaced by the violence.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Binos Yaroe, who raised concerns over coordinated assaults on Kwa, Gyakan, Rigange, Waduku and Tchobo communities.
The affected areas were reportedly attacked by armed men on motorcycles, leaving several persons dead and forcing many residents to flee their homes.
Leading debate on the motion, Yaroe described the incidents as coordinated acts of violence targeted at defenceless communities, despite existing security measures in the area.
Lawmakers expressed concern that the attacks continued even with a dusk-to-dawn curfew in place and a significant security presence in the affected axis.
Disturbed by the development, the upper chamber mandated its Committee on National Security and Intelligence to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the recurring violence, with a view to finding lasting solutions.
The Senate also directed the National Emergency Management Agency to immediately provide relief materials to victims who have been displaced by the attacks.
In a show of solidarity, senators observed a one-minute silence in honour of those killed in the violence.
Contributing to the debate, Senator Amos Yohanna (Adamawa North) described the situation as deeply unfortunate, noting that insecurity in the area has persisted for years despite repeated interventions.
He acknowledged ongoing efforts by the Adamawa State Government but stressed that the crisis has remained unresolved.
Yohanna called for stronger collaboration between federal lawmakers, state authorities and security agencies to reinforce peace-building efforts in the troubled communities.
He further urged security operatives to intensify operations in order to curb further attacks and restore confidence among residents.
Following deliberations, the Senate unanimously adopted the prayers of the motion, signalling renewed legislative attention to the worsening security situation in parts of Adamawa State.
