The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has suspended the Vicar of St. Paul’s Parish, Nteje, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, Ifunaya Maduka, over allegations of staging fake prophecies and miracles.
The cleric was handed a six-month suspension without pay for what the church described as conduct inconsistent with the standards expected of an ordained priest.
In a letter dated April 27, 2026, the Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, Owen Nwokolo, accused the priest of orchestrating manipulated prophecies using individuals allegedly known to him, presenting them as genuine spiritual manifestations.
According to the bishop, the priest admitted involvement in the acts when confronted with evidence.
The diocese said the allegations raised serious concerns, including false prophecy, deception of worshippers, misuse of religious authority and actions capable of amounting to obtaining money under false pretence.
It noted that such conduct contravenes the doctrine and ethical standards of the Anglican Church and has the potential to erode public confidence in the institution.
As part of the disciplinary action, Maduka was directed to hand over all church property, records and funds in his custody to the People’s Warden, and to vacate the parish premises within four days.
The church also disclosed that a disciplinary panel would be set up within one month to carry out a detailed investigation and determine further actions in line with its regulations.
The diocese said the decision followed a review of the matter and was aimed at upholding discipline, integrity and accountability within the ministry.
