The Nigerian government has summoned South Africa’s acting High Commissioner following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in South Africa.
In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria expressed serious concern over the incidents and confirmed that a diplomatic meeting has been scheduled for Monday to address the situation.
Officials said the discussions will focus on rising tensions linked to anti-immigrant protests and reported cases of violence against Nigerians and other African migrants.
According to reports, several people have been killed and others injured in recent weeks, with foreign-owned businesses also affected amid growing hostility.
The attacks have been linked to increasing anti-immigrant sentiment in some South African communities, where migrants are often accused of job competition and involvement in crime.
Although South African authorities, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, have condemned the violence and called for calm, tensions have continued in some areas.
Nigeria has warned that continued attacks could strain diplomatic relations and urged its citizens in South Africa to remain cautious while diplomatic efforts are ongoing.
