The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) are facing a potential political and legal crisis after allegations emerged that their National Legal Adviser, Barr. Reuben Egwuaba, holds dual membership in both parties.
According to records reportedly seen on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) website, Egwuaba is listed as the National Legal Adviser for both parties. This situation has sparked concerns among electoral reform advocates, who argue that it violates Nigeria’s amended Electoral Act.
Activist Julius Aondowase described the situation as more than a clerical error, calling it a serious legal contradiction with significant implications. He cited provisions of the law that prohibit individuals from belonging to more than one political party at the same time, warning that offenders could face fines of up to ₦10 million or imprisonment of up to two years.
He further stressed that the role of National Legal Adviser is a key executive position requiring exclusive membership in a single party, making dual occupancy of the position potentially unlawful.
Aondowase called on relevant authorities, including electoral regulators, to urgently investigate the matter and ensure compliance with the law, emphasizing that Nigeria’s democracy must be guided by clear rules.
The development comes amid recent political realignments involving high-profile figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who are reportedly linked with movements toward the NDC.
