Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government led by Bola Tinubu not to interfere in the affairs of the Nigerian Democratic Congress.
Obi made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja shortly after formally joining the party, calling for an enabling environment to allow members to build the platform without disruption.
Addressing party faithful, the former governor said the focus of the new political movement is to tackle poverty and create opportunities for all Nigerians, irrespective of background.
“We want to build a country where a child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody,” he said.
He appealed to the current administration to respect democratic principles by allowing the party to operate freely.
“We are pleading with the government to allow us build in peace. Please don’t interfere. Let there be respect for democracy,” Obi added.
The former Labour Party flagbearer also cautioned against internal disputes, urging members to avoid litigation that could destabilise the party.
“We don’t want unnecessary court cases. Let us focus on building the party rather than engaging in legal battles,” he said.
Obi’s comments come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition figures continue to seek new platforms and alliances.
