No fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives have dumped the African Democratic Congress for the Nigerian Democratic Congress, in a fresh wave of defections reshaping the opposition landscape.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the development during plenary on Tuesday, confirming the lawmakers’ switch to the NDC.
He also disclosed that another lawmaker, Leke Abejide, had defected from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress.
Those who moved to the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, and Munachim Umezuruike.
Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The mass defection comes barely 24 hours after former presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, exited the ADC for the NDC, in what analysts have described as a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi and Kwankwaso, who recently aligned with the NDC, have reiterated their commitment to pursuing what they described as a renewed vision for Nigeria under the platform.
The latest development signals intensifying realignments within opposition parties, as key political actors reposition ahead of the next electoral cycle.
