The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced that the ongoing nationwide strike will be suspended on May 11, 2026.
The decision follows a fresh agreement reached between the unions and the Federal Government after a series of negotiations led by the government’s expanded renegotiation committee.
In a circular jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions directed all branches across the country to prepare for the suspension of the industrial action.
According to the statement, the Federal Government has pledged to conclude all outstanding renegotiations, including issues surrounding the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS), within two weeks after the strike is suspended.
The unions had earlier embarked on the strike on May 1, citing delays in negotiations and the government’s failure to present a satisfactory offer on allowances and welfare.
JAC noted that the decision to suspend the strike was influenced by appeals from stakeholders and assurances from the government to fast-track the renegotiation process.
While expressing appreciation to members for their compliance and solidarity during the strike, the unions urged branch leaders to communicate the new development and ensure a smooth return to work.
The suspension is expected to bring relief to students and academic activities across universities nationwide.
