Tony Nwoye, senator representing Anambra North, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking the third senatorial defection to the party within a week.
The announcement was made during plenary after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Nwoye’s letter notifying the chamber of his resignation from the ADC and his decision to join the NDC.
In his letter, Nwoye cited internal divisions and multiple ongoing litigations within the ADC as key reasons for his departure. He explained that recent court rulings had further destabilised the party, weakening its structure and making it difficult to function effectively.
His defection follows a similar move by Victor Umeh, who recently left the ADC for the NDC over lingering internal crises. Earlier, Rufai Hanga of Kano Central also joined the NDC from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing factional disputes.
With these developments, the NDC has strengthened its presence in the Senate, increasing its number of lawmakers to four.
The current composition of the Senate now stands at 87 members for the APC, seven for the ADC, four for the PDP, four for the NDC, and one each for APGA, Accord Party, and the Labour Party, while the NNPP holds no seat.
The recent wave of defections highlights ongoing instability within some opposition parties and signals a possible realignment ahead of future political contests.
