The senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has said former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is pursuing his presidential ambition at a time the political equation does not favour the South-East.
Nwebonyi stated this on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he spoke on the prospects of the 2027 general elections and the chances of an Igbo candidate emerging President.
The lawmaker expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu and candidates of the All Progressives Congress would perform strongly in the South-East during the next election cycle.
According to him, prevailing political realities indicate that the region is not yet strategically positioned to produce Nigeria’s next president.
He said the South-East must carefully assess the political environment and determine the most appropriate time to pursue the presidency with broader national backing.
Nwebonyi added that the region needed to be realistic about current political alignments rather than rely on sentiments.
The senator maintained that the APC had continued to gain support in the South-East, insisting that many people in the region had already taken a political stand ahead of the 2027 polls.
