The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, has suspended its prolonged protest over the non-implementation of the new minimum wage and salary adjustments for workers.
The decision was reached during an emergency congress held on Wednesday at the institution’s Adekunle Ajasin Auditorium.
This was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by the union’s Chairman, Comrade Saka-Olokungboye Nurudeen, and Secretary, Comrade Olanitori Olayemi.
The union said members reviewed several issues affecting the institution, particularly unresolved concerns surrounding the implementation of the new minimum wage and consequential salary adjustments already being enjoyed by workers in other tertiary institutions across Ondo State.
According to the communiqué, the suspension of the industrial action followed interventions by key stakeholders and ongoing engagements with the committee established by the state government to address the wage implementation issue in the polytechnic.
The association stated that the protest, which began on February 16, 2026, had been suspended with immediate effect to allow room for dialogue and negotiations.
SSANIP also appealed to the government committee handling the matter to expedite action and conclude discussions within a reasonable timeframe.
The congress further set up a five-member committee to work with the union’s leadership in engaging the institution’s management on other outstanding welfare issues affecting staff members.
Despite suspending the protest, the union warned that it could resume the industrial action if the N70,000 minimum wage was not implemented before the payment of June 2026 salaries.
The association stressed that the suspension was intended to create an atmosphere for constructive engagement, renegotiation and peaceful resolution of the lingering issues.
It also insisted that no member should face intimidation, victimisation or disciplinary action for participating in the industrial protest.
