A support group under the aegis of the Coalition for Jonathan has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan will participate in the 2027 presidential election.
The group made the assertion on Friday, barely 24 hours after Jonathan hinted that he would consult widely before taking a final decision on a possible return to the presidential race.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, the convener of the coalition, Tom Ohikere, said Nigerians should not misinterpret Jonathan’s recent comments regarding the 2027 election.
According to him, the former president only meant that contesting for the presidency required careful planning and extensive consultations.
“Goodluck Jonathan should not be misunderstood when he said the presidency is not a computer game. What he meant is that contesting for the office is a serious undertaking that involves a comprehensive process,” Ohikere said.
He expressed confidence that Jonathan would eventually join the race and appear on the ballot in 2027.
“He has not formally accepted the calls from supporters urging him to contest, but in the fullness of time, possibly within the next one or two days, he is expected to make his position known,” he added.
Ohikere, who identified himself as a member of the African Democratic Congress, also openly appealed to the former president to return to active electoral politics.
Jonathan had on Thursday responded to supporters who marched to his residence in Abuja, urging him to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The former president, while addressing the group, stressed the importance of patriotism, peaceful conduct and credible elections, noting that he would consult before making a decision.
