Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said the Nigeria Democratic Congress will determine whether he emerges as the party’s presidential candidate or running mate to Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso stated this while responding to questions over a possible political alliance with Obi following their recent defection to the NDC.
The former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party in the 2023 election said the decision on who flies the party’s flag would be left entirely in the hands of the party leadership.
“That is a decision the party will make,” Kwankwaso said when asked whether he would accept the position of running mate to Obi.
The former governor, who secured 1,496,687 votes in the 2023 presidential election, also disclosed that the party had yet to conclude deliberations on the zoning of its presidential ticket.
According to him, discussions were still ongoing within the party on whether the presidential slot should remain in the North or be shifted to the South.
“This debate is still ongoing within the NDC on whether the presidential ticket should remain in the North or move to the South,” he said.
“I believe that within the next few days, the issue will be resolved and the party will arrive at an appropriate decision.”
Kwankwaso and Obi had earlier announced their defection to the NDC, citing internal disputes and lingering legal battles within the African Democratic Congress as reasons for their exit.
