Vehicular movement along the busy Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja was severely disrupted on Saturday as thousands of delegates, party members and supporters converged on the venue of the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
The heavy turnout triggered massive traffic congestion around the Central Area, leaving motorists stranded for several hours as major adjoining roads and intersections became overwhelmed.
Observers at the scene said commercial activities also intensified around the convention venue, with traders occupying road shoulders and open spaces to sell food, drinks and other items to supporters attending the event.
Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya and Obidient movements were seen chanting solidarity songs and celebrating around the venue, further complicating access for guests and commuters.
Security personnel were deployed across the area to control the surging crowd and manage traffic as political activities heightened around the convention ground.
The convention comes amid growing realignments within opposition circles ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the gathering, the party formally adopted a resolution zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.
The decision was unanimously endorsed by delegates after a motion moved by the member representing Ogbaru Constituency in the House of Representatives, Afam Victor Ogene.
Political observers believe the zoning arrangement could strengthen the chances of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants within the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the next presidential election.
