A celebration in Ilare town, Osun State, turned tragic after a disagreement over ₦8,000 reportedly led to the death of a man identified as Bukunmi.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened on Friday evening after a group of youths participated in an Egungun masquerade procession where money was collected from residents during the festivities.
After the event, Bukunmi, Pelumi, and another man identified as Femi gathered to share the ₦8,000 realised from the celebration. Trouble reportedly started when Bukunmi and Pelumi, who are said to be relatives, argued during the sharing process.
Femi was said to have stepped in to settle the dispute and prevent a fight. However, the situation escalated when Bukunmi allegedly attacked him by hitting him in the mouth.
Angered by the assault, Femi reportedly stabbed Bukunmi with a knife.
Residents quickly rushed the injured victim to a hospital for treatment, but he later died from the injuries sustained during the altercation.
Eyewitnesses said angry youths at the scene attempted to attack the suspect before operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps intervened and handed him over to the police.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, said the suspect is currently in police custody while investigations continue.
She added that the deceased’s body has been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
