Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has obtained the governorship nomination form of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.
Malami disclosed this in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday, where he declared what he described as a “state of emergency on misgovernance” in the state.
The former minister said he could no longer remain silent amid worsening insecurity, poverty, economic hardship and declining social conditions in Kebbi.
According to him, his decision to join the governorship race was driven by concerns over what he termed severe governance and humanitarian challenges confronting the state.
Malami alleged that Kebbi was experiencing alarming levels of educational decline, poverty and poor healthcare delivery.
He claimed that more than 67 per cent of children between the ages of six and 15 in the state were out of school, while over 88 per cent of children reportedly lived in multidimensional poverty.
The former justice minister also raised concerns over child malnutrition and maternal healthcare, alleging that hundreds of severely malnourished children died within nine months in 2025 due to inadequate medical services.
He further lamented the deteriorating security situation across several communities, citing recurring bandit attacks, kidnappings and displacement of farmers.
According to him, the prevailing insecurity has negatively affected economic activities and exposed what he described as the collapse of critical public sectors.
Malami pledged to prioritise security, education, healthcare, agriculture, youth empowerment and governance reforms if elected governor in 2027.
He said his ambition was rooted in a commitment to accountability, sustainable development and improved welfare for residents of the state.
The former minister also vowed to work towards rebuilding Kebbi into a safer and more prosperous state, insisting that the era of poor leadership and propaganda must come to an end.
