SDP Adopts Adebayo as 2027 Presidential Candidate, Raises Alarm Over Nigeria’s Democracy

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially adopted its 2023 presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, as its consensus flagbearer for the 2027 general elections during its national convention held in Bauchi State.

Adebayo emerged unopposed after delegates and party leaders unanimously endorsed him, with motions for his adoption moved by the Lagos State chairman of the party and supported by chairmen across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The decision was overwhelmingly approved by delegates at the convention.

The adoption effectively positions Adebayo as the party’s standard-bearer ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential race.

During the convention, the chairman of the planning committee, Usman Bugaje, strongly criticized Nigeria’s political environment, accusing the ruling party of shrinking democratic space and undermining opposition activities.

Bugaje also alleged that key democratic institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary, had been influenced by political actors to weaken opposition parties and limit fair competition.

He described the situation as a threat to democracy, warning that such interference in political processes undermines public trust in governance and electoral integrity.

Despite the criticism, Bugaje praised SDP members for remaining committed to the party’s ideology, noting that the party had continued to grow in resilience despite political pressures.

He further drew comparisons with Nigeria’s military era, warning that suppression of opposition voices historically leads to failure, and urged those involved in undermining democratic institutions to reconsider their actions.

The SDP convention comes amid increasing political activity and alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition parties begin early preparations to challenge the ruling party.

Adebayo, a lawyer and businessman, previously contested the 2023 presidential election under the SDP platform, campaigning on governance reform, economic development, and national unity
