Six aspirants of the All Progressives Congress have withdrawn from the contest for the Kano Central senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections and endorsed former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau.
The decision was reached during a meeting reportedly led by Abba Kabir Yusuf in Abuja on Sunday.
The aspirants — Usman Bala, Sha’aban Sharada, Muhammad Zango, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas and Shehu Isa Driver — said they withdrew from the race to promote unity and political stability in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to them, backing Shekarau was part of efforts to strengthen cooperation within the party and avoid internal divisions.
Confirming the development, Salisu Kosawa, special assistant on social media to Governor Yusuf, said all the aspirants agreed to support Shekarau’s senatorial ambition under the APC platform.
Shekarau recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC in April. The former governor announced his defection during a gathering at his residence in Kano attended by political allies and supporters.
During the meeting, Shekarau said the move came after consultations and careful consideration of the political situation.
Ibrahim Shekarau served as governor of Kano State between 2003 and 2011 and later served as Nigeria’s Minister of Education from 2014 to 2015.
