President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti ahead of his 100th birthday, describing him as a man of integrity whose life has been marked by service, courage, and dedication to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement released on Sunday, Tinubu said Fasoranti’s century-long journey reflects “immense contributions” to the country, particularly in education, politics, and the fight against military rule.
The president noted that the Afenifere leader remained committed to progressive ideals throughout his political career and stood firmly for justice and democratic governance even during difficult periods in Nigeria’s history.
Tinubu described Fasoranti as one of the last surviving loyalists of late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo, recalling his involvement in the defunct Action Group during the First Republic and the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.
He also praised Fasoranti’s service as commissioner for finance under the administration of late former Ondo State governor Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983.
According to Tinubu, Fasoranti later emerged as one of the strongest voices against military dictatorship and became a leading figure in the pro-democracy movement during the era of late Head of State Sani Abacha.
The president stated that despite surviving an alleged assassination attempt during the military regime, the elder statesman remained resolute in his advocacy for democracy, Yoruba unity, and national development.
Tinubu further acknowledged the personal tragedies Fasoranti endured over the years, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019.
He thanked the Afenifere leader for supporting his presidential ambition and offering prayers ahead of the 2023 election victory, adding that Fasoranti’s voice continues to command respect across the country.
