A pedestrian and a motorcyclist have lost their lives in a fatal road accident involving a truck along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the agency, the crash occurred at the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward the main gate of Lagos State University.
Preliminary findings revealed that the heavily loaded bucket truck was reportedly speeding from the Volkswagen area towards Badagry when it struck and killed a pedestrian.
LASTMA said the driver failed to stop after the initial impact and continued driving along the expressway.
The agency explained that the situation later escalated when a motorcyclist, accompanied by another sympathiser, chased after the truck in an attempt to compel the driver to stop.
However, tragedy struck again during the pursuit as the truck reportedly rammed into the motorcycle, killing the rider instantly, while the second occupant escaped unhurt.
According to the statement, operatives of LASTMA’s Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team swiftly arrived at the scene and carried out evacuation operations.
The agency disclosed that the body of the motorcyclist, which became trapped beneath the truck, was carefully recovered by emergency responders.
LASTMA further stated that the truck driver was arrested at the scene and handed over to security operatives at the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further investigation.
The remains of the deceased motorcyclist were later evacuated by FRSC officials, while the body of the pedestrian was released to the family after they were informed of the incident.
The authority also confirmed that the truck and the damaged motorcycle had been moved to the police facility pending the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the tragedy as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with reckless driving, particularly among truck operators.
He warned motorists against speeding and urged road users to obey traffic regulations at all times.
Bakare-Oki also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustained traffic enforcement, surveillance and emergency response operations across roads in Lagos State.
