Police Launch Probe After FUTA Student Found Dead Near Campus

The Ondo State Police Command has begun an investigation into the death of a 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), identified as Favour Olaniyi, whose body was discovered in a bush near the institution’s North Gate.

Olaniyi, a student of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was reportedly found lifeless close to his off-campus residence on May 10, 2026.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, detectives who visited the scene observed no visible signs of violence on the deceased’s body. However, a bottle suspected to contain a poisonous substance was recovered near the scene.

The corpse has since been deposited at the morgue for further examination as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

FUTA management described the development as tragic, adding that the institution has contacted the deceased’s family and is cooperating fully with security agencies. The university also disclosed that counselling support is being provided for affected students.
