Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commended Nigerian nurses and midwives for their commitment and sacrifices in sustaining the country’s healthcare system despite numerous challenges.
Obi gave the commendation on Tuesday in a message posted on his official X handle to mark this year’s World Nurses Day, describing nurses as the backbone of Nigeria’s health sector.
“I would like to take a moment to appreciate all the nurses and midwives in our dear nation, who occupy a very special place and play very critical roles in our health sector,” he wrote.
The former Anambra State governor noted that he had consistently supported nursing and midwifery institutions across the country because of the vital role healthcare professionals play in national development.
“Over the years, I have traversed different corners of our nation supporting different schools and colleges of nursing and midwifery because I understand the inevitable role you play in our healthcare delivery,” Obi stated.
He praised Nigerian nurses for continuing to deliver quality healthcare services despite difficult working conditions, including inadequate equipment, poor work environments and overwhelming patient loads.
“Nigerian nurses work under some of the toughest conditions with dignity and courage. From physical and mental stress to high patient-to-nurse ratios, lack of equipment and poor working environments, your resilience keeps our health sector going,” he added.
Obi also acknowledged the achievements of Nigerian nurses in the international healthcare space, noting that many had distinguished themselves in research and clinical practice abroad.
“Beyond the shores of the nation, our nurses have continued to make exploits on the global stage. From leading next-generation research in nursing practice to championing excellence in clinical practice, many Nigerian nurses have lifted the nation’s image globally,” he said.
The former presidential candidate further pledged continued support for the profession, promising increased investment in education and training to improve the sector if given the opportunity.
“My commitment remains that we will build a New Nigeria where your sacrifices and hard work will never go unnoticed. We will invest in your education and training to ensure you remain globally competitive,” Obi stated.
