Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that he would serve only one term of four years if elected president, insisting that nothing would make him remain in office beyond that period.
Obi made the remark in a clip from an interview scheduled to air on News Central TV on Thursday.
According to the former Anambra State governor, a single term would promote political stability and allow for focused governance.
“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day longer than four years, even with a gun to my head,” he said.
Obi also took a swipe at the economic policies of the current administration, expressing concern over rising living costs, increasing debt profile and the country’s worsening economic conditions.
He said Nigeria was currently facing one of its most difficult economic periods in recent history.
The former governor contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, finishing behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Since the election, Obi has remained one of the leading opposition voices, frequently criticising the policies and reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.
