The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has cleared the Alaba Rago setback along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway as part of an environmental enforcement operation aimed at restoring sanitation and order in the area.
According to the agency’s Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the exercise targeted illegal traders, squatters, unauthorised structures, and cart pushers operating within the corridor.
Gbadegesin said the operation became necessary due to persistent indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction of sanitation activities along the expressway. He stressed that road setbacks are not meant for trading or habitation, warning that the Lagos State Government would continue to enforce environmental regulations across the state.
The enforcement exercise was carried out jointly by Lagos State Waste Management Authority, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, and the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources after the expiration of a three-day removal notice earlier served on occupants of the affected area.
Several carts operated by illegal waste handlers were reportedly seized during the operation as authorities intensified efforts to curb indiscriminate refuse dumping and improve structured waste management in Alaba Rago.
The government also urged traders and residents to make use of approved market spaces and designated waste disposal channels to maintain a cleaner and safer environment.
