A young man, identified as Abubakar Haruna, has lost his life in a tragic road accident during a bride conveyance celebration in Potiskum, Yobe State.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, has sparked renewed concerns over reckless motorcycle riding by youths during social ceremonies in the state.
According to eyewitness accounts, a group of young men escorting a bride through a busy area of Potiskum rode motorcycles at high speed while performing dangerous stunts and manoeuvres on the road.
The witnesses said the riders showed little regard for pedestrians and other road users as they moved through the crowded area.
The deceased’s brother, Muhammad Haruna, who confirmed the incident, said the situation turned tragic when one of the speeding riders struck Abubakar on the head.
He explained that the impact caused the victim to lose balance and fall into a nearby drainage channel.
According to him, efforts to rescue Abubakar proved unsuccessful as he died from injuries sustained in the accident before help could arrive.
“Abubakar Haruna’s death is heartbreaking, sudden and entirely preventable,” Muhammad said.
He described the incident as a painful loss to the family, insisting that the tragedy could have been avoided if proper caution had been observed during the celebration.
Muhammad further lamented the increasing trend of dangerous motorcycle displays during bride conveyance processions in the area.
He noted that such celebrations had gradually become associated with reckless riding, posing serious threats to innocent residents and road users.
The bereaved brother called on the Yobe State Government and relevant authorities to enforce stricter traffic regulations and safety measures to curb the growing menace.
He warned that more lives could be lost if urgent steps were not taken to address the situation.
The incident has since stirred concerns among residents over the conduct of youths during ceremonial processions in parts of the state.
