President of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, received a rousing welcome in Gode, Ethiopia, during a visit linked to the company’s fertiliser plant project in the East African nation.
Dangote was hosted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as both leaders inspected the construction site of the proposed fertiliser facility on Sunday.
The project follows a shareholders’ agreement signed in August 2025 between the Dangote Group and Ethiopian authorities for the establishment of a urea fertiliser plant with an annual production capacity of three million metric tonnes.
Construction of the facility officially commenced in October 2025, with the joint venture structured to give Dangote Group a 60 per cent stake, while Ethiopian Investment Holdings controls the remaining 40 per cent.
During the visit, Dangote announced that the total investment in the project had risen from $2.5bn to more than $4bn following an expansion of the project scope.
According to a statement from the Dangote Group, the expanded investment will cover additional infrastructure, including a 110-kilometre gas pipeline, a 120-megawatt power plant, a polypropylene packaging facility and a two-million-tonne NPK blending plant.
Speaking during the inspection tour, Abiy described the fertiliser project as a strategic component of Ethiopia’s long-term economic and agricultural development agenda.
“This initiative represents far more than infrastructure. It is a strategic investment in Ethiopia’s agricultural transformation, food security, industrial growth and economic self-reliance,” the prime minister said.
He noted that the project would significantly reduce the country’s dependence on fertiliser imports while creating jobs and supporting millions of farmers upon completion.

Abiy also expressed satisfaction with the pace of work at the site, saying construction activities were progressing steadily across several sections of the project.
“This morning, together with Aliko Dangote, I visited the project site in Gode to assess the progress achieved so far. I am encouraged by the steady momentum across the project area,” he said.
The Dangote Group stated that the investment underscores the company’s commitment to driving industrialisation and economic growth across Africa.
