The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has blamed Governor Seyi Makinde for the worsening insecurity across the state, accusing his administration of failing to tackle kidnappings, killings and violent attacks effectively.
In a statement released on Friday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC said the recent wave of abductions and criminal activities in Oyo had exposed what it described as the governor’s “lip service” approach to security matters.
The opposition party argued that while other South-West states continue to strengthen their security architecture, Oyo has witnessed increasing cases of kidnappings, hoodlum attacks and violence under Makinde’s leadership.
The criticism followed the recent abduction of teachers and students during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area. The governor had earlier expressed concern over the incident and renewed calls for the creation of state police.
Reacting, the APC accused Makinde of politicising security issues and shifting blame to the Federal Government instead of taking responsibility as the state’s Chief Security Officer.
The party also questioned the effectiveness of the state’s security investments, including the procurement of surveillance aircraft reportedly worth billions of naira, claiming residents have yet to feel any meaningful impact.
According to the APC, the Oyo Amotekun Corps has also suffered poor welfare conditions, inadequate support and alleged political interference despite being created to strengthen local security operations.
The party further alleged that Makinde previously dismissed discussions on state police as a waste of time before later supporting the idea amid rising insecurity.
APC urged the governor to focus on rescuing abducted victims and improving security across the state rather than engaging in political blame games.
