A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to distance himself from a planned convention aimed at endorsing him for the 2027 presidential election.
The faction described the proposed gathering as a “charade” and insisted it was not recognised by the official structures of the party.
The convention, reportedly organised by a Kabiru Turaki-led PDP faction, is scheduled to hold in Abuja on Saturday, May 30, where Jonathan is expected to be affirmed as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna, the pro-Wike faction denied approving or authorising any such convention.
“The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party has been drawn to misleading information and unfounded reports regarding an alleged convention to affirm former President Goodluck Jonathan as the PDP presidential candidate,” the statement said.
“The party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been approved or endorsed by any recognised organ of the PDP.”
The faction warned party members and the public against taking part in what it described as an unauthorised political gathering intended to create confusion within the opposition party.
It also maintained that the PDP had already concluded its internal processes and selected a consensus presidential candidate in line with the Electoral Act and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The statement further called on Jonathan to publicly dissociate himself from the event to protect his reputation and preserve the integrity of the democratic process.
“In view of this development, we respectfully call on former President Goodluck Jonathan to distance himself from this charade in order to preserve the credibility he earned while serving the nation,” the statement added.
The faction also urged security agencies to investigate those behind reports linking Jonathan to the planned convention and to take appropriate action against anyone spreading misinformation capable of undermining the party’s structures.
