Social media activist and commentator, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VDM, has criticized the Federal Government’s response to the abduction of teachers and students in Oyo State, warning that Nigerians may be forced to raise funds themselves to secure the victims’ freedom if authorities fail to act swiftly.
VDM made the statement after a video allegedly recorded by one of the kidnapped victims surfaced online. In the footage, the captive appealed to government authorities to prioritize negotiations with the abductors rather than launch a military operation that could endanger the lives of those being held.
Expressing concern over the prolonged captivity of the victims, the activist questioned the pace of rescue efforts and stressed that protecting citizens remains one of the government’s primary responsibilities.
He issued a four-day deadline to the authorities, stating that if the victims are not released within that period, concerned Nigerians may organize a fundraising campaign to facilitate their freedom.
According to him, the safety of the abducted teachers and students should be treated as an urgent national priority.
The viral video has generated widespread reactions across social media, with many Nigerians calling on security agencies and government officials to intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of the victims.
The incident has also renewed concerns about insecurity in schools and rural communities, as stakeholders continue to advocate stronger measures to protect educational institutions from attacks and kidnappings.
As of the time of this report, government authorities and security agencies had not officially responded to VDM’s ultimatum, although efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims were reportedly ongoing.
