Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has dissolved his cabinet, sacking all commissioners and other political appointees in his administration with immediate effect.
The move, announced in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, on Wednesday evening in Port Harcourt, follows the recent Supreme Court judgment that reshaped the political structure in the state.
During a valedictory session at Government House to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Fubara thanked the outgoing officials for their service and contributions over the past two years, pledging to continue serving Rivers people with “renewed vigour.”
“Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has thanked members of his cabinet for their services and contributions to the development of the state in the last two years… Furthermore, the Governor has relieved all Commissioners and other public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgment of their appointments with immediate effect,” the statement read in part.
The governor also used the occasion to call for unity, urging Nigerians to work with President Bola Tinubu to secure peace and prosperity for the country.
Fubara’s decision marks another turning point in Rivers politics. His previous appointees had faced uncertainty after Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who served as interim administrator during emergency rule, suspended commissioners, dissolved boards, and froze appointments. With Ibas’ exit on September 18, the state assembly had already demanded that the governor submit a new list of commissioner-nominees alongside the 2025 budget.
By dissolving his cabinet, Fubara has set the stage for a fresh round of appointments — a move expected to test political alliances and define the next chapter of his administration.
