President Bola Tinubu has assented to the Electoral Act 2026, introducing a revised legal framework expected to guide Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the next general elections.
Presidential aides confirmed that the new law contains amendments aimed at improving transparency, strengthening result management procedures, and clearly defining the responsibilities of election management institutions.
Officials added that the legislation seeks to address operational shortcomings observed during previous election cycles.
The bill was passed after extensive deliberations by the National Assembly, where lawmakers considered provisions relating to electronic transmission of results, timelines for political party primaries, and mechanisms for resolving electoral disputes.
Federal lawmakers had maintained that the reforms were intended to boost public trust in the electoral system.
The signing ceremony was held at the State House, Abuja, according to the Presidency.
Speaking shortly after endorsing the bill, Tinubu said the amendments underscored his administration’s commitment to credible and transparent elections.
He noted that the new law would strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that the electorate’s mandate is protected throughout the electoral process.
Government officials further explained that the updated framework provides clearer operational guidelines for the Independent National Electoral Commission, particularly in the deployment of technology and the handling of post-election litigation.
They added that consultations with key stakeholders informed the legislative process.
