The Rivers State House of Assembly has put on hold the impeachment proceedings previously initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.
The decision was taken on Thursday during plenary after lawmakers reconvened in Port Harcourt, where members agreed to suspend all actions relating to the impeachment move.
The Assembly had earlier begun steps toward removing the governor and his deputy during its first legislative sitting of 2026, accusing them of alleged gross misconduct.
The allegations levelled against the state’s leadership included the demolition of the Assembly complex as well as claims of spending government funds without approval from lawmakers, among other issues brought before the House.
With the latest resolution, the legislative body has temporarily halted the process, a development seen as easing the political strain in the state after efforts by the presidency to broker calm.
