A 99-year-old resident of Afaraukwu in Umuahia, Abia State, Mrs Sarah Nwanyisunday Oparaocha, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, saying she hopes to see him return home before her death.
The elderly woman made the plea on Saturday while addressing journalists at her residence in Afaraukwu, Kanu’s hometown, during a community meeting organised by residents calling for his freedom.
Speaking emotionally, Oparaocha said advancing age had made her desire stronger, noting that she would soon mark her 100th birthday and wished to set eyes on Kanu again while she was still alive.
She explained that she regularly prays for Nigerian leaders to soften their stance and allow the IPOB leader reunite with his community, adding that the situation often leaves her in tears during her daily prayers.
According to her, life is uncertain, and witnessing Kanu’s return would give her joy and fulfilment in her final years.
The nonagenarian also advised young people to embrace healthier eating habits, encouraging the consumption of traditional foods which she said promote long life, while warning against excessive reliance on processed meals.
Kanu remains in custody amid ongoing court proceedings, with continued appeals from supporters and groups in the South-East advocating his release.
