The Rwanda National Police has issued a warning to Nigerian content creator Joe Bassey after a video surfaced showing him seated on a public roadway in Kigali while recording a clip aimed at highlighting the city’s cleanliness.
The footage, which has since circulated widely online, captured Bassey sitting directly on the tarred road as he filmed.
The act sparked mixed reactions on social media and prompted a response from the authorities.
In its reaction, the police recognised what appeared to be a positive intention behind the content but maintained that the method adopted breached traffic regulations and posed a safety threat to both the individual involved and other road users.
The agency emphasised that using active roads as filming locations, irrespective of the purpose, violates established safety standards and increases the risk of accidents.
In a statement posted on its official platform, the police said it appreciated the good intentions behind the video but stressed that filming on a roadway is unsafe and contrary to traffic laws because it endangers motorists and pedestrians alike.
It advised that such recordings should be carried out in designated safe areas.
The authorities also seized the opportunity to caution social media influencers and the general public to strictly comply with safety rules, underscoring the need to place public safety above the quest for online visibility.
