A 28-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Ayoade Ohiremen, has been reportedly killed following a dispute that broke out during negotiations to acquire a motorcycle in Edo State.
The tragic incident occurred in Ahor community along the Oluku Road bypass in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Benin City.
Residents said the deceased, who plied the Ahor-Uzala axis of the Oluku-Benin-Auchi Road bypass, had joined fellow riders in an arrangement to obtain a motorcycle through a balance-and-carry scheme.
Tension was said to have mounted when some of the riders questioned his involvement in the transaction, alleging that he was not cleared to participate in the purchase.
What began as a verbal disagreement reportedly degenerated into a physical confrontation.
During the fracas, Ohiremen was allegedly overpowered and assaulted.
A community source disclosed that the victim collapsed at the scene after sustaining severe injuries.
It was further gathered that those suspected to be behind the attack allegedly moved his body to a nearby farm before fleeing the area.
The Deputy Corps Commander (Operations) of the Edo State Security Corps, Richard Balogun, confirmed the incident, stating that one suspect identified as Bello Bawa had been arrested.
According to him, operatives swiftly responded to a distress report and launched a manhunt for those implicated in the killing, leading to the arrest.
Balogun added that the suspect had been transferred to the Ahor Police Division and subsequently handed over to the homicide unit of the Edo State Police Command for further investigation, while efforts continue to apprehend others said to be at large.
