The All Progressives Congress has defended the participation of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in the recent area council elections, insisting that he possesses the constitutional right to support candidates of his preference regardless of political affiliation.
The ruling party said criticisms surrounding Wike’s open support for certain candidates during the February 21 FCT Area Council polls were misplaced, noting that political engagement remains a fundamental right of every Nigerian citizen.
Speaking on Channels Television’s programme, Morning Brief, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, stated on Monday that the Constitution guarantees freedom of political association and expression to all Nigerians.
He explained that Wike’s involvement in campaign activities did not breach any law, adding that individuals are free to canvass support for candidates across party lines if they so desire.
Morka further emphasised that democratic principles allow citizens to openly declare political loyalties and participate actively in electoral processes without restriction.
The comments followed debates generated by the outcome of the elections, where the APC secured victory in five out of the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory.
The situation attracted more attention after two chairmanship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party — Julius Adamu in Bwari and Zadna Dantani in Abuja Municipal Area Council — stepped down from the race and later endorsed APC contenders after reported political consultations involving the FCT minister.
Despite the controversy, APC leaders maintained that the election results were a reflection of voters’ decisions, stressing that endorsements and political alliances remain lawful elements of democratic competition.
