Authorities of Ebonyi State University have recommended the withdrawal of 72 students from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science over poor academic performance, while 10 others have been placed on academic probation.
The recommendation was contained in an official document endorsed by the Head of Department, Dr. Victor Usanga, and obtained by journalists in Abakaliki.
Details in the document showed that 41 students in the 100-level and 31 in the 200-level were affected by the withdrawal decision following unsatisfactory academic results.
It also indicated that eight students in the 300-level and two in the 400-level were placed on probation as a result of weak academic records.
The report revealed that many of the students recorded Cumulative Grade Point Averages ranging from 0.00 to 2.44, falling below the department’s minimum academic requirement.
Reacting to the development, the Students’ Union Government raised concerns over the publication of the withdrawal list, urging the university to ensure fairness in handling the process.
SUG President, Chika Abraham Nwuhuo, said although the union recognises the management’s responsibility to maintain academic discipline and standards, due process and transparency must be strictly followed.
He explained that information available to the union suggested that some affected students had not been given sufficient opportunity to review or confirm the results used in reaching the decision.
Nwuhuo therefore called for proper verification of academic records and administrative diligence before final approval or public release of any withdrawal notice, stressing that such decisions must be guided by fairness and clarity.
He appealed to students affected by the development to remain peaceful and law-abiding, adding that the union was already engaging the university authorities through appropriate institutional channels.
The SUG president reaffirmed the union’s commitment to protecting students’ academic interests and welfare, insisting that transparency and equity should remain central to decisions affecting students’ academic future.
