Suspected transformer vandal electrocuted in Ondo community

Residents of Omifon community in Odigbo Local Government Area, Ondo State, were thrown into shock last Wednesday after a suspected vandal reportedly died while trying to tamper with a power transformer.

According to sources, the unidentified man was allegedly interfering with an armoured cable linked to the transformer when he came into contact with live electricity.

One resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, said the electricity supply was on, which made the act extremely dangerous.

“The suspect was electrocuted instantly by the high-voltage current and died at the spot,” the source said.

Personnel from the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) were called to the scene and later removed the body.

The incident has raised alarm among locals, many of whom described it as both tragic and preventable, noting that vandalism of power installations continues to disrupt electricity supply in the area.

Community leaders urged residents to remain watchful and report any suspicious activities near transformers and other utility facilities to the authorities to avoid similar accidents.
