Alhaji Adamu Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has stepped down as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State.
The resignation comes after Governor Ahmadu Fintiri defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that saw most of his key aides follow suit.
Adamu, who had earlier refrained from joining the wave of defections last Friday, formally confirmed his exit from the State Executive Council on Monday, effective immediately.
In a resignation letter made available to journalists, he said the decision followed “careful reflection and deep personal consideration.” He also thanked Governor Fintiri for the chance to serve in the administration and expressed appreciation to the people of Adamawa for their “prayers, encouragement and steadfast support” during his tenure.
Fintiri’s defection on February 27 saw the majority of his cabinet and party officials cross to the APC, leaving only three commissioners, including Adamu, who initially declined to switch allegiance. Overall, 22 commissioners, 39 special advisers, and the state PDP executive committee joined the governor in the political realignment.
