Truck kills passenger who fell from bus in Lagos

A female passenger has been confirmed dead while six others sustained serious injuries following a road accident at New Castle Bus Stop inward Gbagada along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.

The spokesman for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed the incident in a statement released on Sunday.

Taofiq explained that the accident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LSD 654 XY, which reportedly lost control before crashing into a roadside culvert.

He said the force of the collision threw one of the passengers, a woman, out of the moving vehicle onto the busy expressway.

According to him, a fast-approaching articulated truck could not halt in time and subsequently ran over the victim, killing her on the spot.

“The Volkswagen commercial bus suddenly veered off its lane and rammed into a roadside culvert.

The impact of the crash forced a female passenger out of the vehicle onto the expressway, while six other occupants sustained serious injuries, including multiple fractures,” Taofiq stated.

He added that the bus driver and five other passengers also suffered varying degrees of injuries in the incident.

The LASTMA spokesman noted that traffic officers swiftly cordoned off the area to avert further accidents and allow emergency teams to carry out rescue operations.

Officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service later conveyed the injured victims to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

He further stated that personnel from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the body of the deceased from the crash scene.

Reacting to the tragedy, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the family of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

Bakare-Oki also urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to ensure routine vehicle maintenance, especially of their braking systems, to reduce the risk of preventable road accidents.
