Tensions escalated in the Gulf region after several explosions were reported in downtown Dubai during a wave of drone attacks linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
An AFP journalist in the city reported hearing multiple explosions, including one particularly loud blast. Small clouds of smoke were also seen rising from a residential area in the busy commercial district.
Authorities in Dubai later confirmed that the incident involved debris from a drone that had been intercepted by the country’s air defence systems. According to a statement from the Dubai Government Media Office, fragments from the destroyed drone struck the exterior of a building along Sheikh Zayed Road.
Officials described the situation as a minor drone-related incident, adding that no injuries were reported.
Rising Regional Attacks
The Gulf region has experienced increasing attacks in recent days. Reports indicate that at least 24 people have been killed, including seven U.S. military personnel and 11 civilians.
Earlier on Thursday, a container ship sailing in the Persian Gulf was hit by a projectile off the coast of Dubai, causing a small fire onboard. The incident was confirmed by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which said the crew managed to control the fire and remained safe.
Strikes Across Gulf Countries
The conflict has also affected other countries in the region:
In Bahrain, an Iranian strike caused a major fire on Muharraq Island, near the country’s international airport and fuel storage facilities.
In Kuwait, a drone crashed into a residential building, injuring two people.
In Saudi Arabia, air defence systems intercepted a drone targeting the diplomatic district in Riyadh. Additional drones were also destroyed in the country’s eastern region, including one believed to be heading toward the Shaybah oil field.
The United Arab Emirates said its air defence systems were activated twice to intercept incoming threats aimed at Dubai. Firefighters were also deployed to extinguish a fire at a tower in Dubai Creek Harbour after another drone strike.
The latest incidents highlight the growing risk that the conflict between Iran and its adversaries could spread further across the Middle East.
