Tragedy has struck Omiifun community in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State after two men lost their lives inside a deep well, setting off a chain of rescue attempts that ended in double fatality.
The incident began when a man simply identified as Chinedu descended into the well to retrieve his mobile phone after it accidentally fell inside.
Legal Observer learnt that he successfully recovered the device but lost his footing while climbing out and plunged back to his death.
On hearing the commotion outside his home, a neighbour, Kayode Oluwakinse, 46, popularly called ‘Super,’ stripped off his clothes and slippers and volunteered to go in after Chinedu.
The wife of the second victim recounted the moment her husband rushed to the scene.
“We were all inside the house eating with our two children when we heard a loud voice outside. My husband went out to check what was happening,” she said.
She added that on learning their family friend was trapped, Oluwakinse wasted no time.
“He went into the well with a ladder and rings that were inside the well, but unfortunately, he could not come out alive.”
A third man subsequently tied a rope around his waist and descended to rescue Oluwakinse, but lost consciousness midway.
Onlookers pulled him back to the surface before he reached the bottom of the well.
As of the time of filing this report, the third man had regained consciousness and was receiving medical treatment, while also assisting the police with their investigation into the incident.
