A Nigerian diaspora group has urged Claudia Sheinbaum to reject the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, citing concerns about his character and suitability for the diplomatic role.
In a letter sent by the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria and signed by its leader, Frederick Odorige, the group described Omokri as “a misfit” and criticized what it called his alleged moral shortcomings and lack of diplomatic experience.
The group also claimed that the Nigeria government fast-tracked the appointment without proper legislative oversight and suggested that the posting may have been designed to protect Omokri’s personal interests.
According to the petition, Omokri’s presence in Mexico could pose diplomatic and security risks. The coalition alleged he might organize unauthorized protests or actions that could strain relations between Nigeria and Mexico.
The letter further referenced Omokri’s past criticism of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and alleged that the diplomatic appointment could be compensation for abandoning previous opposition political campaigns.
Copies of the petition were reportedly sent to Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the President of the Mexican Senate, and the Mexican Embassy in Nigeria to ensure the issue receives official attention.
The Nigerian government has not yet responded to the concerns raised by the diaspora group. Analysts say the controversy reflects growing scrutiny by diaspora organizations over diplomatic appointments, especially when nominees have prior political controversies.
The development comes amid wider debates in Nigeria about transparency and accountability in ambassadorial appointments, with civil society groups calling for stricter vetting processes to ensure diplomatic nominees meet international standards of professionalism.
