The proposed ‘Finalissima’ match between Euro 2024 champions Spain and reigning world champions Argentina has been cancelled, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced on Sunday.
The high-profile encounter, initially scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, was called off after organisers failed to reach an agreement with Argentina on a new date and venue following security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a statement, UEFA expressed regret that circumstances had prevented both teams from contesting the intercontinental showdown.
“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams the opportunity to compete for this prestigious trophy in Qatar,” the governing body said.
The Finalissima traditionally features the champions of Europe facing the winners of the Copa America. Argentina lifted the inaugural title in 2022 after defeating Italy at Wembley Stadium in London.
Later that year, Argentina captain Lionel Messi also guided his country to victory at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The anticipated clash with Spain would have created a major talking point as it was expected to pit Messi against Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who many football observers see as a future star and potential heir to the Argentine’s legacy at Barcelona.
UEFA said it explored several alternative options to salvage the fixture, but none received approval from the Argentine Football Association.
According to the European body, one proposal was to stage the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, but the suggestion was declined by Argentina.
Another option involved organising the contest as a two-legged affair, with the first match taking place in Madrid on March 27 and the return leg in Buenos Aires at a later date before the 2028 European Championship and Copa America. That proposal was also rejected.
UEFA further suggested hosting a one-off match at a neutral venue in Europe on either March 27 or March 30. However, Argentina indicated it would only be available to play on March 31.
“With these constraints, and much to UEFA’s regret, the 2026 edition of the Finalissima will not take place,” the organisation added.
