President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has met with Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street as part of his two-day state visit to the United Kingdom.
The meeting, which took place on Thursday in central London, forms part of a series of diplomatic engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK. The leaders were photographed exchanging greetings on the steps of the British prime minister’s official residence before proceeding to closed-door discussions.
Tinubu’s trip marks a historic moment, as it is the first state visit by a Nigerian president to the UK in about 37 years, prior to Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
Earlier during the visit, the Nigerian leader was received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, where he attended royal engagements including a state banquet.
The visit is expected to produce several agreements between the two countries. Among them is a proposed £746 million financing deal focused on port infrastructure development, alongside other memoranda of understanding covering trade, defence cooperation, and cultural exchange.
Officials say the discussions reflect efforts by both countries to deepen economic ties and expand cooperation in key sectors. The state visit is scheduled to conclude after a farewell ceremony hosted by the British royal family.
