Ali Ndume has raised concerns over the tactics used by insurgents following the recent bomb explosions in Maiduguri, revealing that the explosives were transported using commercial tricycles popularly known as Keke NAPEP.
The lawmaker disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television while reacting to the attacks that occurred earlier in the week. The explosions, which struck three locations in Maiduguri, reportedly killed 23 people and left over 100 others injured.
According to Ndume, the bombs detonated at a local market, the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover in the city.
He explained that insurgents often adopt a “hit-and-run” strategy, relying on informants within communities and using unsuspecting individuals to transport explosives to target locations.
“You can imagine that even the bomb that exploded was delivered through a Keke NAPEP. This is not something new; they package it and send it to specific spots,” Ndume said.
The senator also blamed the persistence of attacks on intelligence gaps within Nigeria’s security system, noting that insurgents now operate with increasing boldness. He questioned why authorities could track citizens’ phones but struggle to trace terrorists and their activities.
Ndume further criticised the government’s response to insecurity, saying security forces still lack adequate training, equipment, and ammunition needed to combat insurgents effectively.
Despite his criticism, the lawmaker acknowledged efforts by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to tackle insecurity but insisted that stronger and more decisive actions are required.
He cited a recent operation by troops under Operation Hadin Kai in Malam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, where dozens of insurgents linked to Islamic State West Africa Province were reportedly killed, as an example of what can be achieved with proper support and air cover.
Ndume expressed optimism that the insurgency could be significantly weakened within months if security operations are consistently supported with improved intelligence, equipment, and international cooperation.
