The leadership of the Adekunle Ajasin University Students’ Union has initiated discussions with the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers, Akungba branch, following complaints over increasing transport fares by students.
In a statement obtained by Legal Observer and signed by the President-elect, Folagbadé Greatness Ayoola, alongside General Secretary-elect, Amos Oluwatiimileyin, and Public Relations Officer-elect, Omomowo Timilehin, the union said the move was part of efforts to ease the burden on students.
The meeting, held at the NURTW office in Akungba-Akoko, provided an opportunity for both parties to interact while addressing concerns over the surge in transport charges on key routes used by students.
The union leaders decried the fare increases, describing them as excessive and difficult for students to cope with amid prevailing economic challenges.
Responding, officials of the transport body linked the situation to the persistent rise in fuel costs, which they said had forced operators to adjust prices nationwide.
Despite this, the student representatives said they engaged the transport union in negotiations, leading to suggested fares of ₦2,500 to Owo, ₦4,000 to Akure, ₦10,500 to Ibadan, ₦12,100 to Berger and ₦13,100 to Ojota.
They added that the proposed rates were not yet final, assuring students that further dialogue was ongoing to reach a balanced resolution, while calling for patience as discussions continue.
