The Israeli military has raised fresh concerns over Iran’s growing missile capabilities after what it described as a long-range ballistic missile launch targeting a United States military installation.
According to Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Iran recently launched a two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of approximately 4,000 kilometres toward an American military target located on Diego Garcia.
Zamir disclosed this on Saturday, noting that the missile launch demonstrates Iran’s expanding long-range strike capability.
“Just yesterday, Iran launched a two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of 4,000 kilometres toward an American target on the island of Diego Garcia,” he said.
The Israeli military chief explained that although the missile was not specifically aimed at Israel, its range poses a broader strategic threat extending beyond the Middle East.
According to him, several major European capitals would fall within the missile’s operational reach.
“Their range reaches the capitals of Europe — Berlin, Paris, and Rome are all within direct threat range,” Zamir added.
The island of Diego Garcia, located in the Indian Ocean, serves as a strategic military base jointly used by the United States and the United Kingdom and has long been a key hub for Western military operations in the region.
Zamir’s remarks come amid heightened tensions between Iran and Western allies over Tehran’s expanding missile programme and its growing regional influence.
